THE CONNECTION CURE

In July of 2017, I set out on a pilgrimage that is taking me across America in hopes of sparking a revolution of connection.

Over the span of four years I will attempt to visit every state in America, engaging in “micro-moments” with strangers and offering workshops and discussions around the science of loneliness and human connection.

We’ve never needed connection more than we do right now. Our country is polarized and disconnected, which breeds misunderstanding, isolation, fear, even hatred. This disconnect is also making us sick, literally – over 60 million Americans feel so isolated, their health is damaged in ways that mirror the effects of high blood pressure, smoking and obesity.

We all get lonely. But admitting you’re lonely feels taboo. I’m on a mission to kill that taboo, to talk openly about loneliness and disconnect, and help others do that too –and talk to people across the country about how we can connect more, in ways big and small. Because connection is healing. When we engage, when we hear one another, we are gifting that person an immunity boost, quite literally.

What is the Connection Cure Tour?

                                                                  It’s a hypothesis, really:

1. If more people learn about how connection changes our bodies, and begin to connect more – with friends, with family, with total strangers – can we help heal ourselves and start to heal our country? In small ways, what I call “micro-moments.”

2. And, more personally, can I help heal my own body by engaging in micro-moments of connection and deeper engagement with life?

I hope so! And, over the next four years, I plan to visit every state in the country, teaching donation based workshops about the science and practice of micro-moments and connection. The workshops are part storytelling, part discussion, part activities. They can be held with 12 people or 200, in backyards, living rooms, libraries, schools, non-profits, offices, churches… anywhere, really.

On the personal side, I’m working with an internist and infectious disease specialist at Mt Sinai Hospital to measure the impact of this on my body – she’ll regularly measure my blood levels of oxytocin, DHEA, cortisol, vasopressin, and gonadotropin, to see if or how this engagement changes my body.

The science says it all - when we share a positive emotion with someone it spikes our DHEA levels, lowers cortisol, and boosts our immune system. Having a genuine moment of connection with someone (even a stranger) is scientifically proven to change our bodies biochemistry. So, I am testing out this theory on my body, teaching the science behind human interaction, and listening to YOUR stories across America. Can we come together as a nation and create a ripple effect of micro-moments, state by state?

From the Big Apple to the heart of the American West, I will be traveling to answer one question: Can connection be a cure?
